Since tigers were thought to have roamed the hills, Nahargarh, which means “abode of tigers,” was given that name. The fort may have been given the name Prince Nahar Singh Bhomia as well. The fort contains a number of buildings, including a temple honouring the patron saint of the Jaipur kings, a second temple for Prince Nahar Singh Bhomia, a two-story building called Madhavendra Bhavan named after Sawai Madho Singh who built it, and Diwan-I-Aam, an open area where the kings used to convene to listen to the common people’s complaints.

Facts About Nahargarh Fort

  • Despite being constructed as a defensive structure, adversaries have never attacked Nahargarh Fort. The fort’s field cannons were never employed in battle; instead, they were fired to signal the passing of time.
  • The Madhavendra Bhawan, which had 12 identical suites for each of Sawai Madho Singh’s 12 queens, is the most impressive feature of the fort. The interior of the building features magnificent frescoes and connecting hallways that lead to the various rooms. According to legend, the queens’ rooms were constructed in such a way that when the king visited one of the queens, no one else was aware of it.
  • Additionally thought to be haunted, Nahargarh Fort is said to have been hampered in its development by the ghost of a prince by the name of Nahar Singh Bhomia. In order to placate the ghost, Sawai Jai Singh then pledged to erect a temple in honour of the prince and to give the fort his name. The construction continued without incident after that.
  • Many Europeans who were relocated to the fort during the Great Uprising of 1857 received protection from the area’s then-ruler Sawai Ram Singh.
  • Another well-liked location for filming is Nahargarh Fort. Among the movies that were filmed here are Rang De Basanti and Jodha Akbar.

Nahargarh Fort is currently one of Jaipur’s most popular tourist destinations. The magnificent palace is a sight to behold at any time of day, but at night, when the fort is floodlit, it appears as though it is in a dream. The fort is best visited in the evening when you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city at night.
